Remember the old days when you went
to the CD store and bought CD's? Ok, maybe you still
do that, but times they are a changin'!
It won't be too long before digital
download sales will outnumber CD sales. Like it or not,
CD's will soon be a thing of the past. Another thing
of the past will be the old record deal system of getting
signed to a label and giving away over 85% of your income
from sales. I don't think that we are seeing the end
of record companies, just the end of an old way of doing
things. Today, an artist/band can sell thousands of
downloads without ever having penned a recording contract.
There are two things that won't change:
you, or someone else, will always need to promote your
music and you will always need a way of distributing
it. While it is a band's responsibility to promote their
music at the grass-roots level, making agreements with
dozens if not hundreds of individual download sites
is not only futile and a logistic nightmare, it is economically
unsound. The amount of time it would take to contact,
maintain relationships with, encode for, market to and
collect from all these sites individually would easily
turn into a full-time job.
So if there is one area where you should
outsource work, it is this one. We encode your music
to all the different specifications required by all
the sites. ($25 is charged for this, but it is recouped
from sales so that you don't have to pay for it up front.)
Just imagine the cost of sending one or two CD's to
100 sites - then add the postage and the most expensive
part - your time! |
